Recently the ODM team visited a factory in Quangzhou, who specializes in manufacturing polyresin figurines and snow globes. During the trip, we had a chance to take a look at all the steps of production, in order to find out more about the process of manufacturing these items. In addition to the products shown in the video, the factory also produces various models of fridge magnets, garden gnomes, trophy awards, and bobbleheads.

Clay model

In order to begin the manufacturing process, the factory will require a proper product design. We will need to provide detailed artwork and dimensions of each component, in order to produce accurate figures. Once the factory receives the design, it’s time to start sculpting the clay model. This will be used as a reference for mold opening. Once the clay model is fully checked and approved by the client, the manufacturing process can begin!

After the clay model is approved, the factory will move onto opening a mold. The mold is made out of silicone and comprises of two parts. To create the mold the clay models are positioned perfectly straight and clamped down. Melted silicone is then poured over them. The mold is then kept a few hours to dry, in order to obtain the required shape. In the video, you can see one of the workers spreading a special oily liquid over the figure. The liquid is a realizing agent and is used to prevent the model sticking to the silicone mold.

The polyresin liquid is poured into the mold. The mold is then placed in a special oven to speed up the curing process. The video shows how the figurines are removed from the mold after they have been taken out of the oven.

The figurine is carefully polished in order to get a smooth finish
Oil Spraying protection
A special oil is sprayed all over the figurines. This helps to protect the body from the painting.
Painting

The figurines go to a very large room where approximately 20 workers work on painting the figurines.
Once the body of the figurines is completely painted, detail painting is added to the month, eyes at the end of the process.
Printing your logo
There are various techniques to add the logo to the figurine. Decal printing, painting, embossed or debossed effects.

Right after painting, the workers will place the figurines in a temperature controlled room to dry.
Packing
The final step of the manufacturing process is packing. Styrofoam is used to wrap the products, this protects them during transportation. They are then placed in their custom boxes ready to be shipped out around the world.
