Many Factories are closing early today for the Winter Solstice Festival, also known as Dong Zhi (冬至).  Our buying office is operating normally.

This is one of the most significant festivals celebrated by the Chinese and many other East Asian nations, usually celebrated during the Dong zhi solar term (winter solstice) on or around December 22.  This is when the sunshine is usually at its weakest and the daylight shortest.

On this day, families reunite and people tend to get busy stocking food for the upcoming winter in China. Chinese believe that as the day grows longer after the festival 冬至, positive energy will also be stronger. People also wear new clothes and exchange gifts with each other and also visit their departed loved ones.

Rice Dumpling soup (tang yuan) is also present during the celebration.  Much nicer than Moon Cakes !!

The word Yuan (meaning ’round’) signifies completeness/wholeness, hence families will make an effort to get together to celebrate this festival and to rekindle old friendships.

In China, most institutions are also closed during this day, from schools to public offices as people are usually seen celebrating almost everywhere.
