The creators of the famous Mortal Kombat series, have been running a strong marketing campaign for the past few months. This is done in anticipation for their new game, Mortal Kombat X, that will be released on April 15th, 2015.

Games stores in Australia have been advertising the promotional game set, that they title the “Kollector’s Edition” game set.   It features numerous innovative promotional gifts.

Mortal Kombat X – Promotional Game Set

What benefits did this Promotional Game Set bring to the franchise?

The campaign was primarily run in order to add an extra incentive for potential customers to pre-order the games – which means they order and pay for the game before it’s released. Pre-orders are important for game and movie studios, because it not only shows them how well their game/film will do before it’s released, but it also gives them extra funds to market the game/movie further.

There are other benefits when it comes to running this type of campaign. In this particular campaign they’re giving away branded promotional goods, with the purchase of the ‘Kollector’s Edition’, including: a branded steel card, a hand painted statue and exclusive Mortal Kombat content.

The promotional gifts they’re giving away will be of high quality, and will be considered collectors items by many. This means that collectors will happy pay more and pre-order to get the gifts. It also means the gifts will likely be on display, be it at a collectors home or in a shop. This display of the branded goods means increased exposure for the series, which in turn will increase the amounts of fans, and ultimately sales of the game.

More and more gaming studios are running similar promotional game set campaigns in order to raise their pre-order sales, and the amount of fans of their games. If you’d like to read about other gaming studios who have run promotional marketing campaigns, then check out the case-studies below:

It’s not only the game industry in which online sales, pre-orders and promotional goods are so prevalent. The exact same campaign can and has been used numerous times in the movie industry. We have a blog that specializes in these campaigns, that you can check out on Marketing Movies.  Here are a few of my favourite case studies for a quick click:
