During the Watch & Clock fair 2010 at the HKCEC, ODM paid particular attention to the 27th Hong Kong Watch & Clock Design Competition. To enter the competition, students as well other participants had to design a new watch with brand new functions. Judges wanted a good explanation of how it worked and how it was unique. The main point that struck us was that nearly all the watches were eco-friendly, or revolved around the theme of nature.
Our favorites:
- Green Time by Than
This modern flower vase clock is powered by an internal converter that extracts electrons from water molecules and that turns it into a fuel cell. This clock is perfectly in the spirit of our time, of environmental awareness. It is a very decorative item.
- Rotate by P.S.L Ltd
This very trendy watch is fun, and indicates the time and date by rotating the display upwards or downwards. We however believe that the design would need to be thinner to be worn by women, like bracelets.
- The Cartesian Time by Li Tan Ni
This tubular and round clock comes from the principle of Cartesian divers which control the water pressure inside the tube to make the diver rise or fall. This design is very simple, elegant and a brand new way to indicate the time.
- Hydropower Water Saving Clock by Chan Yu Ching
This clock is fixed into a shower head. When you take a shower, water passes through a mill and power is generated. The display made by LED becomes brighter while you shower. A friendly alarm sets off when you prolong the shower saying “save me”! We believe it is a clever way to help regulate water consumption.
With an invention incubator based in Singapore, specialized in developing new products, it is of our interest to follow other designers’ new ideas around the world, in all types of sectors.
