At ODM, we do factory visits on a regular basis to ensure that sampling and production are going well. Also, to check the quality of the materials used and to understand the production process.
Recently, our team visited a watch factory. Usually when we see the end product, it is hard to imagine all of the production steps and components involved.
First, we send specifications and the design of the watch to our supplier. Then, once we agree on all the specifications, the factory starts with sampling and then mass production. If it has custom components, the factory may need to open new moulds.
In order to start manufacturing watches, they make all the components at the same time. Here are the processes of making each component:
To start producing the cases, they need to purchase raw material, this is mainly stainless steel.
After producing the cases, they are drilled, polished and electroplated. A quality check will follow, as it’s the part that will protect the watch movement.
After it comes out of the mould, it is polished, then with a machine tool the dial is cut. After, it is brushed with a special mixture which helps set the first structure on the surface of the dial. Finally, the dial is lacquered, and then the surface is printed by stamping the mould with applied writing ink. During the production process, the workers keep verifying the precision of the marks on the dial.
3) Back Lid
It’s a pretty standard component, which goes through the same processes as the case. The important step here is engraving the logo and other information about the watch, using a laser.
Straps can be made from many different materials, such as genuine and PU leather, nylon, silicone, stainless steel, etc.
For our current order, we are working with PU leather straps. First, the factory needs to purchase leather from the marker, then cut it into two pieces, which are then sewn together. Afterwards, the logo is hot stamped and holes are punched in.
Once all parts are ready, the watch is assembled. Firstly, the body of the watch is put together, including the case, watch movement, dial, crown, hour and minute hands, and glass case. Once the body is ready, the straps are added and fixed in with springs.
The watch is finally ready!
