Every year the gaming world comes together for the Electronic Entertainment Expo, more commonly known as the E3 conference. This year it took place between June 16-18 but preparations and coverage went on for weeks. Leading up to the event – the ODM group used IFTTT as a tool for conference tracking on twitter. By doing this we found out what the most commonly used words were. These tweets were then put in a wordcloud with the most mentioned words being the largest.

Conference tracking is a good way of getting an overview of what people consider to be the most important topics. As seen in the word cloud – Nintendo had the biggest presence on twitter leading up to the event. Having a good social media presence is beneficial for brand awareness and means that people will be more interested in their announcements and products. In this case some of it was due to a negative backlash from fans who considered their showcase to be lackluster. This strong reaction shows how important the brand is to the customers, and the company has listened to the criticism – promising to improve in the future.

By doing this we also found out who the most active tweeters were.  Please note that we analysed over 12,000 tweets and this was far below the total and we just focused on the #E32015 Hash tag.

What did our conference tracking find to be the most used promotions?

Events such as this provide a great opportunity for advertisement due to their popularity. While the industry itself is mostly digitally based – POS display and other promotional products are still commonly used. These are good ways of differentiating yourself from the competition while also promoting your brand. The highly visual nature of the games is reflected in the promotions, with companies competing with one another on who can put on the most extravagant shows.

While being a bit more discreet than some other advertising methods – giveaways are probably the best way to make people interested in your brand. Everyone loves free stuff and the last few E3 conferences have seen some very unique gifts given away. This year was no exception and saw a large number of interesting giveaways. One that really stood out to us was a set of figurines from Bethesda which proved to be really popular among customers.
