Hung Kings Festival 2022: Celebrating Commemoration Day in Vietnam

The ODM office in Hồ Chí Minh, Vietnam will be closed on Monday, April 11th to observe Hung Kings Festival.

The Hung Kings Festival (Giỗ Tổ Hùng Vương), also known as Hung Kings’ Commemoration Day, is one of the most important festivals in Vietnam. It is a national holiday, celebrated annually to commemorate the legendary founders of the Vietnamese nation. People believe that these are the ancestors of all Vietnamese people.

It falls on the 10th day of the third lunar month, commemorating the death anniversary of the Hung Kings. For 2022, the festival falls on a weekend which means workers are entitled to have the following day off as compensation.

The Legend of the Hung Kings

The Hung Kings were said to have established Van Lang, Vietnam’s first nation.

According to legends and folklore, Vietnamese people are the descendants of Lac Long Quan, the son of an ocean dragon who married Au Co, a fairy who resides on Earth. Lac Long Quan and Au Co had 100 eggs from which 100 children were born.

Eventually, the two separated due to differences in living instincts, with half of the sons following each parent. The most illustrious of the sons became the first Hung King who ruled Van Lang, the realm of all the descendants of Dragon and Fairy Au Co who became the Vietnamese people, from his capital in modern Phu Tho province of Vietnam.

The Celebration

Hung Kings Festival is full of symbolic activities. On this day, people from all over Vietnam visit the Hung Temple in Phu Tho Province to pay homage and commemorate Hung Vuong Kings.

Large festivals are held across the country, with people also listening to traditional music and songs and taking part in other cultural activities such as dragon dances, folk games, and art performances.

Travellers can join in the festivities and learn about the fascinating culture of Vietnam, or simply observe the strong connection Vietnamese people have to their history.
