The Legend of the Hung Kings
The Hung Kings were said to have established Van Lang, Vietnam’s first nation.
According to legends and folklore, Vietnamese people are the descendants of Lac Long Quan, the son of an ocean dragon who married Au Co, a fairy who resides on Earth. Lac Long Quan and Au Co had 100 eggs from which 100 children were born.
Eventually, the two separated due to differences in living instincts, with half of the sons following each parent. The most illustrious of the sons became the first Hung King who ruled Van Lang, the realm of all the descendants of Dragon and Fairy Au Co who became the Vietnamese people, from his capital in modern Phu Tho province of Vietnam.
