Marketing in Japan has always fascinated me and I had the chance to visit a leading trade show to learn more. Promotional Products, POS displays and marketing services were all on show and this is our Trade Show Report on Spex which takes place in Tokyo Big Sight.
I arrived at the show and on one of the first alleys a robot was handing out little packs of branded tissues. There was a salesman standing beside the machine to offer that human contact and interact with trade show visitors.
Another cue that we were certainly at a Japanese trade show were the Kimono Clad ladies offering handouts in front of booths. How could we refuse to stop and this marketing material?
Lots more trade show marketing below..
Given how much work ODM does with the EPL (English Premier League Marketing) we had to pick up a sample of this one. This is a plastic fold up puzzle game. You shoot a bottle cork or another other light plastic token at the goal. You can completely customise this with your sponsors or team information. The same style of game can be adapted for basketball and other sports. Baseball is so popular in this country but we did not see so many games for this sport.
Next interlude, we came across an LED Marketing company who arranged for a Japanese Pop Girl Group to sing and dance to keep the crowd entertained. Loads of visitors clapped along and it certainly lifted spirits and showed what really works for in Japan.
Now more products for Marketing in Japan
We liked the Coco Fusen packaging for a page marker that can have your marketing message printed on it. Stick it anywhere you like. We like this since it is a small and relatively unobtrusive promotional item, yet it is highly versatile and has amazing utility value. Having the paper backing card means you can put a really interesting marketing communication message one there. Why not include a service voucher. Thinking about doing this for our design company Mindsparkz.
Hand Held Fans were ever popular and we saw lots of these at the trade show. They are really popular on the streets also and we saw these on promotions by Suntory in convenience stores also. More to follow on this next week. There were a few bamboo fans on display, but the cheaper paper ones were more popular.
“All THE BEST” message on staples was an interesting one. With 20 staple strips, only 5 were printed. Once the pack is used the first time, the message is lost. We feel more branding is needed on these. See the second picture. Maybe a fun dominos style game? These are so cheap you can afford to have fun.
Sanyo Bussan showed their marketing in Japan with big POS figurines. Love these images and readily identifiable with the country for sure.
Next we really liked these Carbon Paper Shoe fillers. These are supposed to absorb odors and have great print areas. Have not seen many of these in Hong Kong. Are they big on your market?
The Bamboo page marker is simple and a great everyday item at same time. Take a look at some of the other range of Bamboo Promotional Products on our blog.
Next we came to a booth with 3D postcards and luminescent displays. We love the cute geckos which are inside a tube with florescent lighting. Simple yet highly impactful.
