Fair Trade Marketing: What Is It and Why Should You Care?

What if your favourite store could give you something more than the product you love? What if it could do good in the world, too? It can, and it probably already is. Fair trade marketing looks out for both the consumer and the producer, offering a way to make an impact beyond just how much money you spend on your purchases.

It’s a common question, and a fair one: “Why pay more for something when I can get it for less elsewhere?” The answer is simple: you’re not just paying more —you’re buying better.

In this blog, let’s talk about fair trade and how it can help people in developing countries improve their lives and gain control over their own future.

What Should You Know?

There’s no shortage of problems in the world, but there are some issues that are more pressing than others. The fact is that many people simply don’t have the same access to opportunities as others; one of the biggest issues is global poverty.

It’s easy to think that poverty is caused by a lack of resources, but this is not always the case. In fact, there’s often a significant difference between having a resource and being able to access it.

This is certainly the case in many third-world nations, where the rich soil produces enough food to feed the entire population — but only if people have the tools and knowledge to cultivate it properly. If they don’t, then they remain hungry even in the midst of plenty.

What is Fair Trade?

Fair trade is a social movement whose goal is to help producers in developing countries make sustainable livelihoods. It’s a global, market-based system that aims to ensure that farmers, workers, and artisans receive fair compensation for their work and have safe, healthy working environments. This is done by ensuring that producers have access to financial services, technical support, and education.

A certification process has been set up to identify products that meet certain criteria, and the resulting label helps consumers recognize those products. Products marketed under the fair trade label often have a favorable price that is guaranteed, regardless of market fluctuations.

By shifting the focus from price to value, fair trade ensures that all parties are treated fairly, with equal respect.

Fair trade marketing has three main goals:
  • To provide better trading conditions for farmers, workers, and producers.
  • To empower disadvantaged communities through fair pricing in order to improve their lives.
  • To encourage sustainable production practices that protect the environment.

It is difficult for consumers to know what kind of labour went into making the products they buy. Fair trade allows customers an opportunity to have greater visibility into these processes, which makes it easier for them to choose products that align with their values and beliefs about how workers should be treated worldwide.

Why Should You Care?

Every time you buy fair trade products, you’re supporting a system that combats the problems caused by modern capitalism. Fair trade is more of a set of principles than an actual organization — it’s about making sure everyone gets a good deal in the production chain, from farmers to manufacturers to customers.

It’s a way to ensure workers and producers are paid fair wages for their work and can live at least modestly well. It’s also about being environmentally responsible, by supporting businesses that observe sustainable practices and promote biodiversity.

Wrapping It Up,

Fair trade comes down to one thing: a higher standard of living for everyone. When farmers and workers are paid a fair wage, they can afford the education and healthcare necessary to provide a better future for themselves and their families. Fair trade is about alleviating poverty and helping people help themselves.

When you buy fair trade products, you’re helping to ensure that marginalized producers receive just wages. This means more income for them to provide basic necessities, such as food, clean water, housing, education and healthcare—and that’s good news for everyone!
