From October 8th to November 12th, poi are made accessible for fans entering the stadium in match venues – Eden Park, Waitākere Stadium and Northland Events Centre. A huge number of poi are being produced by a range of local suppliers, with the championship focused on working with developing Māori businesses.

What Should You Know About Poi?

1. Poi is the name for both the performance art and the object. 

Poi is a traditional dance, art and craft of the Māori people of New Zealand.

It includes vigorous movements of the body, arms, and poi (usually a ball or pair of balls attached to a cord) that are accompanied by music.

Poi is a unique Māori taonga (treasure) that flourished in Aotearoa, New Zealand.

It was used by indigenous Māori to develop balance and coordination, sharpen their reflexes and increase the flexibility and strength in their hands and arms.

Poi were traditionally made by wrapping the leaves of harakeke New Zealand flax) around the soft down of raupō (a wetland plant also known as bullrush) to form the ball.

Modern poi come in many different shapes and sizes and are made of many modern materials including wool, cotton, plastic and paper.
