What is sustainable branding? Sustainable brands actively integrate solutions to social, environmental, and economic issues into their business. Although environmental issues are only one part of “sustainability”, assessing the impact of your business on the environment is a good place to start. One good example is the use of custom drinking straws made from reusable or biodegradable materials.

Reusable and environmentally friendly alternatives are gaining popularity as plastic drinking straws fall out of favor. Not too long ago, we have featured reusable drinking straws in our blog. Made from sturdy and reusable materials, these drinking straws are the future of the F&B industry.

Although eco-friendly, they can be a bit pricey for small food stalls that depend on their daily income. While disposable paper straws are an excellent alternative, they might not be completely sustainable.

Sustainable Branding – Grass Drinking Straws

Bamboo straws are an excellent alternative to plastic straws, but grass drinking straws are another level- as far as sustainability is concerned.

How Sustainable is Grass Drinking Straws?

Grass straws are made from a gray sedge grass species called Lepironia Articulata. Locally called “Co Bang”, it grows around the Mekong Delta Region in the southwestern region of Vietnam. It has a hollow stem that makes it ideal for sipping drinks.

An excellent alternative to plastic drinking straws, these grass straws are designed for one-time use only. It costs less in terms of manufacturing and production cost. Manufacturers and farmers do not use special chemicals to treat the grass, therefore making it 100% natural.

In terms of manufacturing, no special machines or equipment are used to make them. They are harvested, cleaned, washed, and dried before they are sold to the market.

When sold fresh, the stem is cleaned with an iron rod before the final washing. The fresh ones can stay up to 2 weeks in the fridge. Boiling it with some salt and letting it dry is also a great way to prolong its life.

How bout dried ones?

The straws are dried in the sun for 2-3 days and then baked in an oven to kill any bacteria, mold, mildew, and contaminants that linger in the straws. The dried straws last for about 6 months at room temperature.

Considering all these factors, grass straws are 100% green!

How Do I Use These Eco-Straws for Sustainable Branding?

Aside from the fact that plastic is non-biodegradable, manufacturing it is also bad for the environment. Imagine the energy and resources that go into making them. Not to mention, the wastes that come from factories. What’s worse, we only use them for a very short period of time. Single-use plastic bags and drinking straws may be small, but their environmental impact is increasingly hard to ignore.

While recycling is important, investing in eco-friendly products is more sustainable and beneficial for the environment. This is why we believe grass straws are a great way to start the “green revolution. The question now is, how do I use these eco straws for sustainable branding?

Fast-food is one of the sectors that use plastic straws the most. If you take a look at your take away orders, you will find a plastic straw included in the bag. Opting for grass drinking straws instead of plastic is a huge step towards real sustainability.

How are grass straws better than current alternatives like paper and compostable plastic straws?

Paper straws cannot handle hot and cold beverages for too long. They deteriorate too quickly when wet. Biodegradable plastics are not always ready to decompose, and when they do break down, they produce methane gas that would contribute to global warming. Bioplastics are good but they compete to drain the agricultural resources for foods.
