How has COVID19 affected Air Freight from China?

Cancellation of Flights

In the early stages of the virus, in February 2020, over 25,000 commercial flights to and from China are suspended to contain the spread and health concerns for workers. Therefore, shipping goods by air freight from China would be difficult.

Reduced Capacity

Approximately, 50% of the air cargo carried worldwide normally flies in the belly of passenger jets rather than in cargo planes. With the cancellation of flights, the capacity for air freight from China dropped by 39% in February relative to 2019.

Increased Rates

With the drop in belly cargo capacity, shippers are rushing to shift their consignments to the limited spots on cargo planes. This resulted in rates for air freight from China to surge, making air freight more costly. Air freights rates from China are expected to continue rising.

What about other countries during this pandemic?

Although the COVID19 situation is getting better in China, other regions like Europe, America, and Asia, are affected greatly by the virus. Due to concerns of it becoming more and more widespread, some countries have decided to close their borders and go on lockdown and others have canceled flights to and from the country.

Therefore, with the drop in the number of international flights, the air cargo industry is not so bright for now and in the coming weeks.

What does this mean for companies?

With the cancellation of international flights, companies are now advised to transfer their air freight orders over to sea freight. Companies will expect a delay in their shipments by about three to four weeks.

In addition, when shipping containers leave an overseas port, they should stay out on the sea for a minimum of 14 days, which is the quarantine period, before they dock. Therefore, expect a delay in your estimated time of arrival and place your orders as early as possible.

To ensure that you are getting your custom promotional merchandise from China on time, it is important to know how to calculate container shipping time. We have a previous blog on that topic so be sure to check that out!
