Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau mega bridge: Hong Kong to Zhuhai bus

The Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau mega bridge is China’s newest infrastructure feat that connects Macau and Hong Kong- two Special administrative regions of China – with the mainland via Zhuhai. Opening the Hong Kong to Zhuhai bus routes will cut travel time and possibly open more opportunities for locals and foreign investors alike.  For such a massive Public Works Construction Project, there has been Military Level secrecy on its progress.

The bridge opened on 23rd October with a ceremony. First public transport on 24th October. Right now we recommend taking a ferry from Zhuhai to HK island. It takes approx 80 minutes including customs. http://www.hzmbus.com/

Check out the trip we took from Causeway Bay to Zhuhai by bus – we will be bringing lots of clients to China & have written a blog on the journey that we title – Buying Office Visit.  The journey started at 5.30 AM and we arrived at the office around 8.45 AM.

The bridge-tunnel complex is made up of three bridges and one undersea tunnel. According to reports, HZMB (Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau-Bridge) will reduce the 4-hour drive from Hong Kong to Zhuhai to less than an hour. Once the mega bridge is fully operational, a Hong Kong to Zhuhai bus route schedule will be released.

At the start, you needed to go to the train station to buy tickets to get on the bridge. Given the line up for tickets this morning and long journey, it makes the same trip an estimated 4-5 hour ordeal.  We expect that the bridge will be more usable and new routes may open up in the next months.  Our team took the 19-minute journey almost entirely in the tunnel from West Kowloon to Shenzhen Bei (N. Shenzhen) station on the new fast train mid-October 2018 and loved the service, though security & ticketing were over burdensome.

We recently saw this display board in Hong Kong detailing the building of the tunnel section of the bridge. Four different construction methods were adopted to cater for different ground conditions and topographical constraints!

The First Batch of 25 Buses for HZM Bridge are Getting Ready!

BY CAR

If travelling by car, do drivers need to have a driver’s license issued by Macau? Do their cars need to have Macau plate number? No. However, car owners will have to apply for the Macau Port Park-and-Ride Scheme in order for them to cross the mega bridge and park their cars at the East Car Park of the HZMB at Macao Port.

Car Owners Will Have to Obtain the Following Permits:

  1. Closed Road Permit issued the Transport department of Hong Kong
  2. Identification Label issued by the Macao government and;
  3. Electronic temporary vehicle license from the Mainland

How Long Does it Take to Process Your Application?

Applications can be done online or by mail. For those wish to apply at counter service, an appointment should be made at the GovHK website.

Processing of applications takes approximately 12 working days. The Transport Department will send the Closed Road Permit and the identification label by mail to successful applicants. To know more about the application process, check out the related video below:

How Long are the Permits Valid For?

The Macau Identification Label is valid for 3 years while the Hong Kong Closed Road Permit is good for 1 year. This means car owners can use the permits multiple times unless they run out of validity.

The application for Macau Port Park-and-Ride Scheme is an arduous process and private car owners may find this impractical. Nevertheless, the China mega bridge promises shorter travel time and cheaper fare for Hong Kong to Zhuhai bus commuters.
